What’s the Worst That Could Happen?: Impact Wrestling Preview, 6/20

TNA Says: Thursday’s IMPACT will feature the official start of the annual Bound For Glory Series – and ALL 12 participants will be in action on the huge broadcast! Based on fan votes at our website, either Jeff Hardy or Bobby Roode will get the first call-out to kick off the BFG Series! On Thursday, the annual competition begins, with one lucky superstar eventually winning a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship!

Best Case Scenario: The show is built around the kicking-off of the series, and the announcers remind the audience of why all these matches are important throughout the show. All the competitors are involved in matches where they can show off one or two of their signature moves and get across why they are the “12 Men to Watch” in TNA.

Worst Case Scenario: The announcers do a poor job explaining the rules and/or importance of the series (the odds are dead even that this will happen). Too many of the competitors look weak right off the bat, losing first round squash matches.

Dave Says: When people ask me what TNA does that the WWE doesn’t, the BFG series is one of the few good cards I have to play. Sure, the scoring is a little convoluted with the overvaluing of submissions and the massive penalties for being counted out, but all in all, I like the concept a lot. WWE’s Royal Rumble produces some of the highest drama and intrigue of the wrestling year in one pay per view, but the BFG series asks the same question and extends the answer over the summer.

TNA Says: “The Icon” Sting shocked the wrestling world by announcing he was forming a new MAIN EVENT MAFIA in TNA! Will Sting reveal more about his plans this Thursday to reform one of the most dominant groups in TNA history? Who will be the members of Sting’s Main Event Mafia? Don’t miss more from Sting on IMPACT!

Best Case Scenario: Sting gives an official “mission statement” promo for the new Main Event Mafia. He describes exactly what kind of professional and personal qualifications the wrestlers he’s looking for must have. One or two wrestlers cut promos backstage lobbying for a spot in the new Mafia.

Worst Case Scenario: Well, I could paint a Hieronymus Bosch grotesque of the worst case scenario for this whole angle, but I’ll hold off on that… Honestly, the worst thing that could happen on this show is for this angle to (a) completely dominate the show with Sting in five-plus segments or (b) the angle to not seem important at all a week after Sting’s “big announcement.”

Dave Says: TNA has grossly overestimated the value of Main Event Mafia stock. The idea of Sting putting together his “Ocean’s Eleven” team to take on Aces & Eights at Bound For Glory is a good storyline for the summer, but I don’t think the angle needs the MEM name. It’s not like Steiner, Booker, or Nash is going to be there, so why trade so heavily on a name that was associated with them?

TNA Says: TNA Knockouts executive Brooke Hogan will give a “State Of The Knockouts Division” address on Thursday night! What does Brooke have planned for the ladies of TNA?

Best Case Scenario: Brooke gives a Hogan-style rah-rah speech as only a Hogan can, but is interrupted by Mickie James, who comes to the ring and is so phony that even Holden Caulfield has to give respect. Mickie establishes herself as the top dog and dares the Knockouts to come at her.

Worst Case Scenario: 10 minutes of Brooke. Enough said.

Dave Says: You know how people get excited for the State of the Union address? You know how it’s supposed to be a pithy, deep, and frank exploration of that which is our nation? This is like the opposite of that.

TNA Says: Plus, Thursday’s OPEN FIGHT NIGHT edition of IMPACT will feature more of your favorite superstars, including Hulk Hogan, World Heavyweight Champion Bully Ray and the Aces and Eights, Kurt Angle, World Tag Team Champions “Cowboy” James Storm and Gunner, X Division Champion Chris Sabin, AJ Styles and many more!

Best Case Scenario: Storm and Gunner do something to get their heat back after getting blocked out of the BFG series by Bad Influence. Bully Ray cuts a promo about how he’s absolutely not scared by any of the men in the series and is just waiting to destroy whichever one of them is unlucky enough to win. There’s some kind of continuing character development for A.J. Styles.

Worst Case Scenario: All of the people in the above list are in a battle royal involving Andre the Giant’s corpse. The last man in the ring with Andre is Sabin, who blows out both his knees going over the top rope.

Dave Says: Good ol’ TNA. They have a pre-taped show, but they only advertize three specific things and then just print a list of other exciting TNA superstars (including their world champion) ending in “and many more!” It’s like a tease for the Kids’ Choice Awards.
